Girls Swimming and Diving Sweeps Sectional Meet

Girls swimming and diving Sectional meet may be thought of as just another swim meet to qualify for state, but this meet is anything but just another meet.

The competition starts at the beginning of the season, not competing for state but competing against one another for a spot on sectional line up. Two weeks before sectionals head coach Matt Papachronis along with other coaches make the decision of what group of girls will assemble the best line up for state in a team meeting other wise known as “Judgment Day”.

Emotions run high in the week leading up to prelims, which take place on the Thursday before the championship part of the meet on Saturday. Top 16 advance to Saturday and the rest are sent home with nothing to show for a season of hard work.

Stakes are raised given all the girls have trained for about 25 weeks for 16 to 18 hours a week.

“I know with all the hard work they have put in they deserved the experience to show off,” assistant coach Lindsay Bradshaw said.

To advance to state a swimmer has to either win sectionals, swim a state cut time, or be pulled into the top 32 girls who qualified. Tensions between the girls raise as the meet starts knowing to advance to the next level they have to race not only the Sectional but their teammates.

“I feel very excited and nervous,” senior captain Hope Christy said.

Three relays won at sectionals and are headed to state.

Along with them, senior Kit Hanley advanced in the 200 and 100 free. Christy took the 100 breaststroke, sophomore Delaney Isakson won the 500 free and Junior Kaitlyn McPherson and senior Shannon Glesing are advancing in the 50 free.

In addition, the Panthers took home the sectional trophy with a total of 535 points defeating second place Franklin Central with 332 points.

The season was hard fought but all worth it when NC shined and was victorious in sectionals for yet another year.
