Spirit Week’s Lack of Diversity

Spirit+Weeks+Lack+of+Diversity

Homecoming week is an important and exciting week for North Central. With the football game, tailgate, dance and pep rally it gets the students excited for the upcoming school year and all the events surrounding it.

One aspect that plays a critical role in the excitement of homecoming week is the themed dress up days, which is also known as spirit week. This year’s themes are character, tie dye, pink out, throwback, and class colors day.

Every year, Student Council decides on what the students are encouraged to wear every day leading up to the homecoming game on Friday night. While some ignore the idea of having school spirit, others go “all out” and dress up in as much spirit wear as possible.

Themes that have been used regularly at North Central include American, Ugly Sweater, Hawaiian, College, Decades, and Class colors. These themes are used almost religiously and although they are relatively easy to adhere to, is has frustrated some students, especially seniors who want to see more creativity in the themes.

“I just feel like the same themes are used every year,” senior Taylor Burns said.

The lack of diversity in the themes every year has frustrated some students, and although they are not always used, suggestions have been made on new ideas for spirit week themes.

“I think a celebrity look alike day would be cool,” senior Paige Robinson said. “It would definitely be interesting to see what everyone comes up with.”

Although some have only been a student at North Central for a mere few weeks, underclassmen agree that the more creative the theme the better. Freshman Valentino Ivy is one of those underclassmen who would like to see different themes used.

“Disney would be a really fun theme,” Ivy said.

Despite the themes that were selected this year, one idea is for sure: school spirit will remain high.
